Rodri played the full 90 minutes as Spain ensured they topped Group H by beating Uruguay 1-0 in their final group stage game in Guadalajara, Mexico.
In an eventful clash, the European champions scored the all-important only goal on 42 minutes through Álex Baena after an error by veteran Uruguay keeper Fernando Muslera.
The South American side’s boss Marcelo Bielsa then opted to substitute Muslera – Uruguay’s all-time record appearance holder at half time – before they had midfielder Agustin Canobbio sent off late on for a high challenge on Pau Cubarsi.
The victory ensured Spain top Group H and the highly fancied European side will now face either Austria or Algeria in the last 32 at Los Angeles Stadium on Thursday, 2 July (20:00 BST).
Uruguay meanwhile are out.
Jeremy Doku figured for 56 minutes as Belgium thrashed New Zealand 5-1 in Vancouver to ensure they finished top of Group G.
In what was a must-win game for both sides, Arsenal striker Leandro Trossard struck twice either side of half time before former City legend Kevin De Bruyne further extended the Belgian’s lead.
And though Elijah Just netted his third goal of the World Cup to reduce arrears six minutes from time, Belgium added two more late efforts via substitutes Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Saelemaekers to seal a dominant win.
Rudi Garcia’s side will now face a third-placed team yet to be determined in the last 32 on Wednesday, July 1.
Elsewhere in Group G, City striker Omar Marmoush came on as a second half substitute as Egypt fought out a 1-1 draw with Iran to seal second spot in Seattle.
Mahmoud Saber opened the scoring on five minutes to give the African giants the lead only for Iran to level nine minutes later through Ramin Rezaeian.
The Iranians thought they had secured a dramatic late winner – and with it a place in the knockout stages - when Shoja Khalilzadeh turned home but his effort was disallowed for offside following a lengthy video assistant referee check.
As Group G runners-up, Egypt will now play Australia in their last-32 tie in Dallas on Friday, 3 July (19:00 BST).
Iran, who finished with three points, could still also progress depending on the outcome of the remaining group games elsewhere.
