A look back at Vivianne Miedema’s first two seasons at Manchester City.

Her move to the Joie Stadium was confirmed on 5 July 2024, two months after the announcement that she’d be leaving Arsenal at the end of the previous campaign.

The WSL’s record goalscorer, Miedema had forged a reputation as one of world football’s deadliest attacking talents during her time in North London, and she showed similar predatory instincts in her first few months at the Blues.

Scoring on her debut in a 5-0 UEFA Champions League win over Paris FC, she’d repeat the trick in our WSL opener as City drew 2-2 at Arsenal.

Though she’d spent the majority of her time at the Gunners as a centre-forward, Miedema featured in a more withdrawn attacking role for the Blues, providing the perfect foil for free-scoring Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw.

In her first five appearances the Dutch international earned three goal contributions, including an assist in our famous 2-0 win over reigning European champions Barcelona.

Unfortunately, that victory in front of a record Joie Stadium crowd was Miedema’s last appearance of the calendar year after undergoing a successful knee surgery.

The 2024/25 campaign was ultimately a frustrating one for City, but Viv’s goalscoring exploits did provide some memorable moments on her return to action in January.

A stunning long-range effort at Aston Villa, for example, was voted the WSL Goal of the Season, while she was also instrumental in a gutsy 2-0 first leg win over Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-finals, grabbing both City goals at the Joie Stadium.

All told, Viv ended her first season in Blue with 11 goals and four assists in 19 appearances across all competitions – an impressive return for a player still finding her feet after returning from long-term injury in her final year at Arsenal.

But it was 2025/26 where City fans really got to see the best of our number 10.

Again, in the most successful season of our history to date, Miedema was a central piece in the puzzle.

She finished the campaign with 25 appearances in all competitions and 19 goal involvements – a figure only bettered by Shaw across the squad.

Her quality consistently shone through in an attacking midfield role, with Miedema afforded freedom to influence the game across the pitch.

A brace against Manchester United at Old Trafford capped off a remarkable individual performance in March 2026, while she also set up Shaw for her 100th City goal en route to a 6-1 win over Aston Villa three months prior.

The latter of those two performances also included a sublime assist for Aoba Fujino, with a defence-splitting ball releasing the Japan international down the right.

It was outstanding awareness to even attempt the pass, but to execute it with that level of precision summed up everything great about our number 10.

That Villa result also kickstarted a hot streak for the Dutch international, with her registering 11 goal contributions in eight appearances between December and February.

During that run, she also provided a typical pinpoint pass for Kerolin to open the scoring in a vital 2-1 win at London City Lionesses – a result which many highlight as a key moment in our march to the WSL title.

One week later and City famously put Chelsea to the sword, with Miedema once again starring for the Blues with another goal and assist at the Etihad Stadium to further underline her influence on our rapidly developing bid for the WSL title.

Her final league appearance would ultimately prove to be that standout display at Old Trafford, but Miedema would return in time to net our fourth and final goal in a 4-0 FA Cup final win over Brighton after coming off the bench at Wembley.

In two seasons at City, Viv has grabbed 25 goals and nine assists in just 44 appearances but to focus solely on her numbers (as impressive as they are) would do a disservice to her overall contribution.

Our number 10 is an important leader in an exciting young squad and deserves tremendous credit for the role she played in ultimately helping the Blues achieve the Double for the first time in our history in 2025/26.

And with recovery from injury in full flow this summer, there’s a sense we’ll be seeing the best of Viv once again at City in 2026/27.
