Gareth Taylor has praised the contribution of City’s five debutants as we began our Continental Cup defence with a 6-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers.

Sandy MacIver made her competitive bow between the sticks, while young quartet Annie Hutchings, Gracie Prior, Lois Marley-Paraskevas and Emma Siddall all came off the bench in the second 45.

Demi Stokes and Esme Morgan also excelled in new positions at centre-half and defensive midfield respectively as the boss rotated the squad under the Academy Stadium lights.

Reflecting on a positive evening for City, Taylor was pleased with how each player stepped up to the plate to claim all three points in Group B.

“Yeah, [it was] a great experience,” Taylor said of our five debutants.

“It was Sandy’s first start as well and she did well with the one save she had to do.

“Demi was in a kind of alien position as well, but she did it really well. Esme was good in the first half, her and Kerstin were two strong players in the first half.

“The young players came on and did well and contributed in the goals. We scored some good goals tonight.”

It was an evening to remember for Australia international Mary Fowler, who grabbed her first goals for the Club in our win against Blackburn.

Leading the line, the 19-year-old kept her cool from the spot to open her City account in the first 45, before completing a brace with a clinical volley after the hour.

And while Taylor added that she still has elements to work on, he was pleased with what he saw from the youngster.

He explained: “Mary’s a good player. There’s no doubting her ability. She’s young, she’s only 19.

“She’s come from the French league and she’ll grow and develop really well with us.

“She’s a different type of number nine, encouraging her to join the build-up play a little bit more is key but I think there were some really positive signs from her tonight.

“She scored a good couple of goals and made chances for the team as well.”
