Manchester City had no fewer than 17 on-loan players in action this weekend, with mixed fortunes across the board.

A trio of Blues where involved in a thrilling game in La Liga.

Pablo Maffeo, who earned rave reviews for his man-marking job on Lionel Messi last weekend, and Aleix Garcia both started for Girona against Celta Vigo.

The Catalan outfit lead 2-1 only to surrender their lead before Douglas Luiz was introduced in the 83rd minute and Girona were level shortly after to take a share of the spoils.

In the Premier League, Joe Hart kept a third clean sheet in four games as West Ham registered a last gasp win over Swansea City at the London Stadium.

With the away side having only one shot on target the England keeper had a quiet afternoon, but did well to keep out former team-mate Wilfried Bony’s effort from distance.

Fellow keeper Angus Gunn will have been equally pleased on Saturday evening after his Norwich City side made it seven games unbeaten in the Championship, with an impressive 2-1 win away at Reading.

This followed a midweek victory at Middlesbrough, in which the England U21 played a starring role, repeatedly denying the North East outfit to give the Canaries a 1-0 win at the Riverside.

Elsewhere in the Championship, there was less to celebrate for . The youngster started for the second game in succession and played an hour as the Ipswich went down 3-1 at home to Bristol City.

However, there was better news during the week as the attacking midfielder converted Martyn Waghorn’s backheel to get himself on the scoresheet in a 5-2 victory over Sunderland.

In League One, Kean Bryan and Rodney Kongolo had contrasting results with Oldham Athletic and Doncaster Rovers respectively.

Bryan, who played the full 90 minutes in midfield as the Latics won 3-2 against high-flying Peterborough last Tuesday, started at centre-half against Portsmouth on Saturday.

A 2-1 win at Fratton Park saw Oldham register back-to-back wins for the first time this season, with Bryan again playing the duration.

Kongolo was left disappointed after his Doncaster side lost out 2-0 to Bradford City at Valley Parade, a result that leaves them one-point behind Bryan’s Oldham and 18th in the third tier.

City’s NAC Breda contingent had no such luck against ADO Den Haag, who ran out 1-0 winners.

Thierry Ambrose, Angelino, Manu Garcia and Pablo Mari all started for Breda, whilst Paolo Fernandes came off the bench in the 76th minute.

Jason Denayer’s Galatasaray remain unbeaten at the top of the Turkish Super Lig after a 3-2 victory over Karabükspor. The Belgian centre half was introduced during injury time on Saturday.

The latest round of fixtures in the Scottish Premiership saw Patrick Roberts and Brandon Barker do battle as Celtic hosted Hibernian.

The wing pair both came off the bench in a bid to win the game for their respective sides, who played out a 2-2 draw in Glasgow.

Across the city from Roberts, Aarone Nemane was an unused substitute as Rangers overturned Hamilton Academicals 4-1 away from home.
