Women's Euros: How our City stars fared on Matchday One

Matchday One of the 2022 Women's Euros is complete for our City stars.

There were positives aplenty for our Blue representatives, as England, Norway and Spain all kicked-off their tournaments in winning fashion with Sweden drawing - and there was even a goal for one of our midfield maestros.

We take a look at how things stand for our players ahead of the second game.

England

Four of Gareth Taylor‘s squad were in action as competition hosts England opened the tournament in front of a record crowd at Old Trafford.

Keira Walsh, Lauren Hemp and Ellen White started the game, while Chloe Kelly was introduced from the bench and Ellie Roebuck, Alex Greenwood and Demi Stokes were unused substitutes.

Beth Mead grabbed the game’s only goal with Hemp involved in the build-up, to register a crucial three points on the board for Sarina Wiegman’s side and put them top of Group A before Norway’s opening fixture...

Norway

Julie Blakstad was on the scoresheet, as Norway stormed to the top of Group A with a 4-1 win over Northern Ireland.

Our January recruit opened the scoring on 10 minutes in Southampton, latching onto Guro Reiten’s pass and drilling into the nearpost to break the deadlock.

The 20-year-old completed 88 minutes at St Mary’s with the Grasshoppers issuing a strong statement of intent, ahead of their next assignment against England, where she will face her City teammates.

Spain

City fans were given their first glimpses of new signings Leila Ouahabi and Leila Aleixandri when Spain ran out 4-1 winners over Finland.

Ouahabi started the game and played for just over an hour, while Aleixandri impressed in the final half-hour as La Roja came from behind to triumph in Group B.

Germany’s 4-0 victory over Denmark lifted Die Nationalelf top of the group but Spain, who are among the favourites, will be pleased with their start.

Sweden

Filippa Angeldahl figured for 70 minutes in an absorbing Group C opener as Sweden and reigning champions the Netherlands fought out a 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane.

The City midfielder impressed in what was a fiercely fought encounter between two of European football’s leading lights.

All three teams in Group C opened their campaigns with a draw but with Sweden facing Switzerland and then Portugal in their next two group encounters they will be looking to step up their bid to reach the knockout stages.
