Jill Roord believes Manchester City’s FA Cup victory over Durham will give Gareth Taylor’s side a boost ahead of what’s shaping up to be an exciting 2024.

The Dutch international’s brace was the catalyst for a dominant 4-0 win over our Championship opponents at Maiden Castle, taking her tally for the season to eight in all competitions.

Laura Coombs and Mary Fowler were also among the goals as City turned on the style in our first competitive fixture of 2024.

And Roord believes the result and performance will leave a positive impact moving forward, with a tricky WSL clash against Liverpool to look forward to next week.

“Obviously it’s a totally different game, but this one was important for us to get used to each other again,” she explained.

“Going into Liverpool now we have a good feeling, we’re confident and very excited.

“Everyone’s excited for the [rest of the] season and you could see that.”

Roord’s first goal was perhaps the pick of the bunch, with the midfielder finding the top corner in impressive style after picking up play from Chloe Kelly.

She also linked up effectively with Lauren Hemp for her second, playing a one-two before lofting the ball over the onrushing Durham stopper.

Unsurprisingly, the Dutch international was delighted to have made such a large impact on proceedings at Maiden Castle.

She said: “The first goal, I was free, Chloe passed me the ball and hit it really well. I don’t think I could do it again if I tried!

“The second was really good play from Hempo [Lauren Hemp].

“I’m happy with the win, and happy I got to score two.”
