Gareth Taylor says Alex Greenwood is recovering well after suffering a nasty head collision during the Belgium v England Nations League clash in midweek.

Greenwood, with 101 City appearances under her belt to date, won’t be available for the crucial WSL clash with Arsenal on Sunday, but Taylor said the important thing is she is OK and will be back as soon as she is ready.

“We had a good conversation with Alex, who was back today with us,” said Taylor.

“It was a nasty blow and there was lots of concern regarding her at that time.

“We’ve gone through, and England have through the necessary protocol with these head injuries.

“Of course, she isn’t available at the weekend, and we’ll make sure her return is managed in the right way.

“The paramount thing is her health and welfare. We’ll make sure she’s looked after.

“We spoke yesterday and exchanged text messages on the evening (of the game).

“It was a scary and uncomfortable moment, but she’s very brave and determined and so brave in all she does and plays.

“She’s frustrated because she’ll miss the weekend, but excited by what we’ve done so far this season, and she’s played a big part in that.

“But of course her welfare is the most important thing. The handover with England was really good, she’s now back in our camp.

“Of course (it’s too early to predict when she will return) – she is due to see a specialist next week, so we’ll learn more once the experts have assessed her.”

Taylor also revealed Lauren Hemp is closing in on a first start since the dramatic WSL clash with Chelsea last month.

Hemp, who was on the bench against Leicester, but impressed with England against Belgium, is in contention to start against the Gunners.

“She is really close (to starting) and that was case versus Leicester as well,” said Taylor.

“She had a shoulder problem on the back of the Chelsea game, but she’s absolutely fine.

“She’s available and got back in against Leicester and played on international duty.

“She’s back in for the weekend.”
