Phil Foden says he is happy with his start to the season despite being forced to miss nearly a month of the season after a red card in the Manchester derby.

City are preparing for our fourth game in the Champions League on Wednesday night at 20:00 (UK) when we face RB Leipzig in Germany.

We have won two of our opening three matches with Foden scoring a hat-trick on our last European occasion when we beat AEK Athens 5-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

That came after scoring his first goal in the Premier League in the win over Ipswich following a three-match suspension from the win over Manchester United.

“I think personally it’s gone really well [this season],” he said at a pre-match news conference in Leipzig.

“I had the unfortunate red card against United. But the break did me good.

“I think I came back really fresh minded and sharp. And I’ve been involved in a lot of goals recently so I’ve been really happy with my own performance to be honest.

“It was a long time without football, which felt really strange. But it gave me time to work on things I needed to work on.

“And when I came back I just felt fresh and like I could help the team.”

On what’s working well, he added: “Being involved in goals gives you a lot of confidence.

“And when you’re playing regularly as well you kind of just get into a rhythm and a groove.

“And also it helps when you play with similar players as well. You kind of understand what they are going to do before even thinking about it.

“So all those things there definitely help but we will see what happens.”

Foden is also playing without Pep Guardiola as his boss for the first time.

The Catalan coach handed him his debut as 17-year-old nine years ago this month and he is enjoyed remarkable success with the first team since as he moves closer to 400 appearances for the Club.

He did work with new boss Enzo Maresca when he was Pep’s assistant and says his philosophy is very similar.

“It’s similar stuff to be honest with Enzo,” he added. “And me personally as well I still play different positions with him.

“Different positions require different things from myself.

“I more understand him as well more than the other players because I’ve worked with him in the past so that helps me.

“I try and help the team and the team-mates that need help maybe being in the right position.”
