Manager Joe Royle initially signs the strapping centre-half on loan but the impact he has is so great that the deal quickly becomes permanent.

He is soon made captain and starts with three goals in his first four games, including a spectacular volley in a 3–0 win at Oldham.

Roberto Mancini’s men sail into a two-goal lead through Edin Dzeko and Aleks Kolarov but have to survive a nervy final 16 minutes with ten men, following Vincent Kompany’s red card.

The Belgian concedes a penalty, which is despatched by Stephen Hunt - but the home side wrap up the points in injury time.

City are at our scintillating best to thrash West Brom at the Hawthorns.

Two first-half goals from Sergio Aguero put the game beyond too much doubt – his first a lethal finish from close range after a wonderful through-ball from Ilkay Gundogan; his second a long-range bender that flies into the top corner and gives Ben Foster no chance.

Aguero turns provider late on, setting up Gundogan to score from inside the area, before the German bags his second with one minute remaining to seal a 4-0 rout.

Two goals in added time snatch a thrilling victory over Birmingham in the FA Women’s Super League, as City continue our 100% start to the season in dramatic fashion.

Jennifer Beattie heads home Megan Campbell’s monster throw-in to snatch all three points at the Academy Stadium, while Izzy Christiansen bags two from the spot, after Lucy Quinn had opened the scoring from 35 yards.

The game is turned in City’s favour when Birmingham captain Kerys Harrop is sent off moments after the home side’s leveller.

The Algerian’s solitary strike clinches the points, as City return to the top of the Premier League table.
