Looking back at this day – good or bad – in City’s history…

14 May

1977

Jim Conway’s solitary goal gives City a 1-0 win at Coventry to confirm second spot in Division One as the Blues miss out on the title by a single point to Liverpool.

Disappointing though it is to finish second, it is still City’s best top-flight finish for nine years.

1981

City face Tottenham Hotspur in the replay of the Centenary FA Cup final, after playing out a 1-1 draw in the initial encounter five days earlier.

Despite falling behind to an early Ricky Villa goal, City rallied, with Kevin Reeves’ penalty putting us 2-1 up after Steve Mackenzie had equalised with a sensational 20-yard volley.

However, Garth Crooks poked past Joe Corrigan to restore parity with 20-minutes remaining and, moments later, Villa scored a fine winner to break City fans’ hearts.

1995

City lose 3-2 to Queens Park Rangers on the last day of the season, in what proves to be Brian Horton’s final game in charge.

The R’s first win at Maine Road is secured via a last-minute strike from Les Ferdinand, after City came from behind twice to draw level.

Niall Quinn and Keith Curle got the goals after Ferdinand and Danny Dichio had scored for the visitors.

2007

Stuart Pearce’s reign as manager comes to an end the day after the conclusion of the 2006/07 season, which finishes with a 2-1 defeat away to Spurs.

Originally appointed as caretaker manager, Pearce made a strong start as City just missed out on a UEFA Cup place in the 2004/05 campaign, his second full season was vastly different as we fail to score at home after New Year’s Day.

He departs having taken charge of 97 matches, of which he won 34 of them.

2011

Our 35-year wait for a major trophy is ended as we beat Stoke City 1-0 in the FA Cup final.

Yaya Toure, as he would prove time and time again, was the hero, crashing home an unstoppable drive 16 minutes from time in a game we dominated.

A Wembley win of great significance, this was the trophy that kick-started the most successful period in the Club’s history.

2013

City beat Reading 2-0 at the Madejski Stadium to win our first game following the departure of Roberto Mancini.

Brian Kidd was in caretaker charge after the Italian’s reign came to an end the previous day, with Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko on target in a comfortable victory.

It was our first league win at Reading since March 1999, when both teams were in the third tier of English football.

2014

City beat Liverpool Women 2-1 in the group stage of the Continental Cup.

Abbie McManus’ fierce 18-yard drive gets Nick Cushing’s side off to a flying start, with Izzie Christiansen curling one into the bottom corner to seal all three points after Natasha Dowie had equalised for the visitors.
