Manuel Akanji featured for the entirety of Switzerland’s 2-2 draw with Kosovo in their fifth European Championships qualifier match on Saturday evening.

It took Switzerland 14 minutes to take the lead.

Remo Freuler’s shot into the bottom right corner was unreachable for Burnley’s Arijanet Muric.

Despite heavy attempts by Ricardo Rodriguez, Switzerland were unable to extend their lead before half-time.

Kosovo, sat fifth in Group I before kick-off, were in need of points if they are to qualify for the 2024 tournament so came out for the second half with more purpose in front of goal.

And it paid off. Milot Rashica showcased his brilliant technique when his lobbed cross into the box was met by Vedat Muriqi’s header at the left post 25 minutes into the second 45.

Akanji and Fabian Schar continued to work well as a duo in the second half, often aiding in Switzerland looking to begin attacks from their own half.

And after persisting in front of Kosovo’s goal, Rodriguez was finally rewarded in the 79th minute as his deflected shot fired into the back of the net.

Akani and Schar were tested heavily in the closing stages of the match and were unfortunate when Muriqi got his second of the game as his rocket shot fired inside the right post.

Switzerland will complete their international break by hosting Andorra on Tuesday 12 September at 19:45 (UK).
