TACTICS

4-3-3 for City today, with Erling Haaland the focal point in attack.

Ederson starts in goal, with his distribution a vital aspect of City’s build-up play.

Ruben Dias, who captains the side, will form a centre-back partnership with Nathan Ake.

Kyle Walker starts on the right-hand side, with Joao Cancelo on the left. Two of the finest attacking full-backs in world football, their desire to get forward and supplement attacks will be key for City.

Rodrigo will play as the holding midfielder, with the energy of Bernardo Silva and guile of Kevin De Bruyne just ahead of him. It’s a midfield containing a perfect blend of attributes.

Riyad Mahrez will play on the right of City’s attack, with Jack Grealish, so impressive in the US, on the right, and Haaland will play as a central striker. Grealish and Haaland will be looking to continue the linkup play they produced in the win over Bayern Munich in Green Bay.  

Haaland provides City with a significant physical presence through the middle, but in his pre-match press conference Pep Guardiola made it clear he expects his strikers to drop deep and get on the ball. 

After a summer of change for City, this could be a very exciting season. 

PREVIOUS MEETING

City fell at the semi-final stage of the FA Cup after a 3-2 defeat to Liverpool at Wembley in April.

The Reds established a commanding half-time lead, thanks to Ibrahima Konate’s header and a double from Sadio Mane.

Guardiola’s men scored almost immediately after the restart through Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva tapped home in stoppage time to make it 3-2.

But Liverpool held on during a frantic period of added time to book their spot in the Final, where they edged out Chelsea on penalties.

City defeated the Merseysiders in the 2019 Community Shield, winning 5-4 on penalties after Joel Matip had cancelled out Raheem Sterling’s opener.

LAST TIME OUT

Haaland’s first City goal 12 minutes into his debut clinched victory over Bayern Munich in the second of two pre-season fixtures in the United States of America.

On a night of remarkable weatherin Green Bay, Wisconsin, the game was delayed for 15 minutes due to an electrical storm and then paused just after Haaland’s opener.

Despite the interruption, Guardiola’s men held out for our second win of two, having also defeated Club America 2-1 in Houston, Texas.

Liverpool have played three friendly games, falling to a 4-0 defeat to Manchester United before earning victories against Crystal Palace (2-0) and RB Leipzig (5-0).

We have met the Merseysiders on 220 occasions competitively, winning 58 of those fixtures, and are unbeaten in eight of our last 10 games against them.
