Ahead of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 meeting with RB Leipzig, we look back on our 2021/22 clashes.

We were drawn with the German side as well as Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge in a highly competitive Group A.

All four of those sides have this season reached the last 16 of the competition.

There were 12 goals in the two matches between the two sides as City went on to top the group with 12 points.

Here we’ll look at those two games in 2021/22...

City 6-3 RB Leipzig, 15 September 2021

Nathan Ake and Jack Grealish scored for the first time in the Champions League as we got the better of Leipzig in a nine-goal thriller to ensure we made a positive start to our group stage campaign.

With supporters back at the Etihad Stadium for a European tie for the first time since November 2019, Pep Guardiola’s men recorded a remarkable 6-3 victory to become the quickest English team to reach 50 wins the competition.

Riyad Mahrez, Joao Cancelo and Gabriel Jesus also scored for City with an own goal from Nordi Mukiele completing the six-goal haul.

Christopher Nkunku scored a hat-trick for the visitors to make City work hard for the victory.

RB Leipzig 2-1 City, 7 December 2021

With qualification already secured, ten-man City’s Group A campaign ended on a frustrating note as Pep Guardiola’s side slipped to a 2-1 defeat in Germany.

However Dominik Szoboszlai and Andre Silva struck in both halves to power a fired-up Leipzig into a two-goal lead.

Though Riyad Mahrez set up a grandstand finish with a fine stooping header on 76 minutes, City couldn’t force a leveller.

The match ended with Kyle Walker being sent off for foul play nine minutes from time.
