Jeremey Doku has made the move to Manchester City from Stade Rennais accompanied by handsome praise from such formidable footballing figures as Kevin De Bruyne, Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappe to name but a few.

The exciting 21-year-old Belgian winger has signed a five-year deal with the Club, penning a contract that will take him through to the summer of 2028.

And despite tender years, it’s fair to say Doku has already made a notable impression on his peers and respected senior figures within the game.

Belgian international colleague and now new City team mate De Bruyne for one made plain his admiration after witnessing Doku register his first international strike on only his second appearance for the Red Devils during a 5-1 win against Iceland back in November 2020.

“He is nimble, fast and he can dribble,” said De Bruyne.

“Of course, he sometimes makes a mistake, but who doesn’t? He is a diamond in the rough.”

Former Belgium national manager Roberto Martinez was the man who afforded Doku his international bow back in 2020.

And after naming the youngster in his Belgium squad for the EURO 2020 tournament, he described Doku as “an exceptional talent who is very strong one on one.”

Martinez then re-emphasised his praise and admiration for the player ahead of last winter’s 2022 World Cup finals where Doku was again part of the Red Devils’ squad, saying: “When I talk about him, I have to smile.

“He’s one of those players who can bring magic to his game.”

Former Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry, who served as assistant to Martinez during his time in charge of Belgium, also got to appreciate Doku’s talent first hand.

And he was equally complimentary about the player’s skills sets and natural talent.

Speaking in April of this year, Henry described Doku as ‘extraordinary’.

“Rarely in my life have I seen a player come out of a dribble so quickly, extraordinary. Now, injured, not consistent, does he replace himself? We are harder on players like that. If he is good, he is really impregnable.”

France and Paris Saint-Germain talisman Kylian Mbappe knows all about Doku’s ability first hand having come up against him on several occasions in Ligue One.

And speaking with France Football back in 2021, he was hugely complimentary about Doku’s quality – not least his blistering pace, one of the standout qualities of his game.

“Recently, I was speaking with my father about a player who impressed me because of his speed qualities, that is (Jérémy) Doku, at Rennes,” Mbappe declared.

“In five years as a professional, I have never seen someone from a standing start demonstrate so much power.”

Former City and France star Samir Nasri, who briefly played alongside Doku during his time at Anderlecht, is another admirer of Doku’s exciting potential.

And for his part, he is adamant the player is going to continue to go from strength to strength.

“I think he has a great future,” Nasri declared. “He has crazy quality in one-on-ones and is an explosive dribbler.

“He can be one of the best 20 players in the world one day.”
