Esme Morgan believes the performance of Kalvin Phillips in the 3-0 FA Cup win at Bristol City can provide a platform for him to excel in the final months of the 2022/23 season.

Phillips joined City in July 2022 on a six-year contract from boyhood club, Leeds United.

But, before the Robins win, he’d been restricted to just 10 appearances in the sky blue of City.

However, the defensive midfielder produced a strong performance at Ashton Gate over the 90 minutes.

And Morgan, a key member of our women’s team, was impressed with what she saw.

But, more importantly, she thinks the display can offer him confidence in the closing stages of the campaign, with City fighting on three fronts.

Speaking on our Matchday Live show, she said: “I think that’ll be really good for his match sharpness

“I was really impressed with some of his passing. In the first half, he made a few very nice punch passes through the lines.

“In the second half, he just seemed to keep it simple, ticking over, doing pretty much the Rodri role that we’ve grown used to, receiving the ball, moving it on with five or ten yard passes and allowing the creative players to go and express themselves by being an anchor in midfield.

“I think it was a really good steady performance to hopefully build his confidence in the system and be a platform for him now over the coming weeks to step off that and make more of a name for himself in the team.”

Her fellow guest, Nedum Onuoho, was equally happy with Phillips in the Fifth Round victory.

He thinks some of his anticipatory play demonstrates he’s getting up to speed after a stop-start beginning to life at City.

He added: “Kalvin played a good game.

“He moved the ball really well.

“Defensively he got in a few key tackles at key points. That’s that sense that comes in playing the matches. The fact he’s got that is a huge positive.”
