Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both had unforgettable days the last time Manchester United came to the Etihad Stadium.

The pair scored a hat-trick each as we ran riot and put six past Erik ten Hag’s side in October 2022.

As childhood City fans, it was just about the perfect day for both men.

The 6-3 scoreline made it the highest ever scoring Manchester derby in any competition in the 188th meeting between the sides.

City v Manchester United | Match preview

It says something about the magnitude of the Manchester derby and the joy of beating our local rivals that that performance stands out even in a Treble-winning campaign.

The duo scored two each ahead of half-time before Antony pulled one back for the visitors.

Haaland was the first to claim a match ball in the 64th minute before feeding Foden for his third in the 73rd minute.

Anthony Martial then added two late strikes to give a degree of respectability to the score for United.

The pair became the third and fourth Manchester City players respectively to score a hat-trick versus Manchester United after Francis Lee in December 1970 and Horace Barnes in October 1921.

Having grabbed trios against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest earlier in the season, Haaland became the first player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick in three consecutive home games in the competition.

We were only the third side to have two hat-trick scorers in a single Premier League game, after Arsenal v Southampton in May 2003 (Jermaine Pennant, Robert Pires) and Leicester v Southampton in October 2019 (Ayoze Perez, Jamie Vardy).

It was the first time that we scored six goals in a home game against United in all competitions, while the previous two instances of City scoring six against our rivals came away from home (6-1 in January 1926 and 6-1 in October 2011).

Both players have since added hat-tricks to their CVs, with Haaland now on eight at City and Foden scoring a second at Brentford last month.

The Norwegian broke most records that season, scoring 52 times in 53 appearances including 36 in the Premier League. He has continued to contribute at an incredible rate this term and now has 79 City goals in 83 appearances.

Our No.9 and our No.47 have since added hat-tricks to their CVs, with Haaland now on eight at City and Foden scoring a second at Brentford last month.

Foden ended the 2022/23 season on 15 goals but has already surpassed that this campaign, hitting 16 with three months still to go.

We lost at Old Trafford a few months later due to a controversial offside call but won the crucial FA Cup final at the end of the 2022/23 season.

We were again dominant in the away fixture in the first half of this season, with Haaland scoring twice and Foden once as we won 3-0 on the other side of town.

That meant that Haaland hasn’t scored against any other Premier League team more than he has against United.

With United returning to the Etihad Stadium this weekend, Haaland and Foden are in superb form in front of goal and will be looking to add to their tallies come Sunday.
