The Italian was appointed as the men’s boss in June, penning a three-year contract and succeeding Pep Guardiola in the Etihad Stadium dugout.
It follows his successful spells at Leicester, where he led the Foxes to the Championship title in 2023/24, and Chelsea – guiding the Londoners to the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup between 2024 and 2025.
This will be his third stint at City, having previously coached our Elite Development Squad and been part of Pep Guardiola’s backroom staff in 2022/23.
During his first meeting with the media as City boss on Friday, Maresca explained how his philosophy was clear at his previous employers with winning matches the number one priority.
“It was a clear identity at former clubs I joined, Leicester and Chelsea, probably the reason City came to me is a similar concept with the previous manager,” he said.
“We always try to be aggressive off the ball, control the game and be the ones to impose our ideas and try to do the most important thing, which is win football games in the end.”
City’s pre-season preparations began at the start of this week, with staff and players returning to the City Football Academy following a well-earned break after 2025/26.
But with the 2026 FIFA World Cup taking place across the summer, it’s meant Maresca hasn’t been working with a full squad with those involved in the tournament afforded a prolonged rest.
Regardless, the Blues boss has been pleased with what he’s seen so far with a number of Academy players stepping up into the senior fold.
And the Italian lifted the lid on when he expects those currently not present to return.
He added: “The last group of players are going to join us three or four days before the Community Shield final and then we’ll have all the players, until then I am working with many young players.
“Full of energy, some of them very good. I’m very happy.”
