Pep Guardiola Preview

“One of the toughest games we had last season was against Southampton.

“We won at home 5-2, but the first 30 minutes, they were the team that caused us most problems last season.

“I know Ralph (Hassenhuttl). It will be a similar game to Leipzig. They move quick in the transitions, the team know what they have to do.

“They played against Manchester United at home really well and deserved to win.”

WATCH: City 6-3 Leipzig: Highlights

Last time out

City began our Champions League campaign in style with an entertaining 6-3 victory over RB Leipzig at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Nathan Ake opened the scoring with a towering header, before an own goal and Riyad Mahrez penalty cancelled out Christopher Nkunku’s strike to secured a 3-1 advantage at the break.

And a thrilling second half made Pep Guardiola’s 300th match in charge of City one to remember, as Jack Grealish grabbed a debut Champions League goal before Joao Cancelo and Gabriel Jesus, also making his 200th appearance for the Club, rounded off the scoring under the Etihad lights.

Nkunku completed a hat-trick for the visitors to keep Leipzig in the game, but it was to no avail as City deservedly began Group A with three points and a 50th win in Europe’s elite competition.

Form guide

We face Southampton in fine fettle having won our last four in all competitions, scoring 17 times in the process as we sit fifth in the Premier League.

That record is particularly impressive at the Etihad Stadium, where Pep Guardiola’s men have won each of our domestic matches against Norwich and Arsenal 5-0, before scoring six against RB Leipzig on Wednesday evening.

Saturday’s opponents currently sit 14th in the Premier League with three points from their four matches so far.

After an opening day defeat Everton, Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side have picked up three hard-fought draws against Manchester United, Newcastle United and West Ham United respectively.

Last meeting

City bounced back from a first defeat in 28 matches with an emphatic 5-2 win over Southampton in March 2021.

A brace apiece from Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez, plus a further strike from Ilkay Gundogan extended Pep Guardiola’s men’s lead at the top of the Premier League table to 14 points with nine matches remaining.
