Pep Guardiola says John Stones could start against Aston Villa, but he won’t know if Jeremy Doku is available until after Tuesday afternoon’s training session.

City are definitely without suspended pair Rodrigo and Jack Grealish for the clash at Villa Park, meaning Stones may return after several weeks out.

“He was ready for the last game, and he’s ready now,” said Guardiola when asked about Stones potentially starting the game.

He also says Stones could play in the role Rodrigo normally fills but that he is looking at several possibilities against a Villa side who currently have a 100% home record in the Premier League this season.

“John can play there, yeah,” said Pep.

“Akanji as well, and Ake.

“We don’t deny Rodri’s importance, but he’s suspended, like Jack.

“We’ll find the best solution to compete against VIlla.”

Guardiola was also asked how Kalvin Phillips had been training and whether he could fill the midfield pivot void on Wednesday evening.

“Yeah there is a chance,” he said.

“Today I have to see training in the afternoon and see how the players are and feel. The decision will be made tomorrow.

“(Kalvin’s training has been) exceptional. I don’t have any bad comments about him, as I’ve said many times.

“As for Doku, again, we have training this afternoon. I will talk with the doctors and see after.”
