Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad ended their 2016/17 campaign last Friday with a comeback victory over Southampton but what have their highlights of the season been?

Simon Davies’ side finished second in the Premier League 2 after February exits in both the UEFA Youth League and Premier League Cup. Here we pick our favourite moments…

Any of Paolo Fernandes’ sweet left-footed efforts early in the season could have made it here but it’s actually the Spaniard’s strike against Liverpool which lives longest in the memory.

Brahim Diaz, normally an attacking midfielder, was in the central striker’s role that night against experienced campaigners Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori.

Despite a major physical difference, Diaz more than held his own against the pair and even shrugged off Sakho in order to lay the ball off for Fernandes to finish.

It was a showing of how City’s technical quality can see them through even the toughest of challenges.

Man United 1-3 Man City

Unlike the first team, City’s youngster had enjoyed a break over the festive period and the freshness certainly helped at Leigh Sports Village in January.

The Blues were in control against their bitter rivals from the first minute but had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock.

Brahim Diaz reacted quickest to tuck home before United equalised out of nowhere just minutes later. It seemed like all of City’s hard work may have come undone but finishes from Isaac Buckley-Ricketts and Paolo Fernandes ensured City left with the three points they deserved.

Best moment

It had been a trying 2016 for French striker Thierry Ambrose but when he made his comeback at Everton in November, it was apparent he was keen to make up for lost time.

When he netted during his first start of the season just a week later, the feeling of joy inside the Academy Stadium was palpable and etched all over Ambrose’s face.

Now 20, the pacey attacker, who can play as a central striker or on the wing, will be looking to make a big impact following a full pre-season.
