It was a tense opening 45 minutes with both teams carving out clear-cut chances that couldn’t come to fruition.
As a result, it was all to play for in the second half.
It was hard to know which way the game would go, but City finally found the upper hand. Teddie Lamb prodded home Jake Wain’s cross on 66 minutes, and it sent our young blues into the ascendancy.
City looked sharper, more confident and controlled the game better.
And it allowed us to hold out for a narrow, well-deserved derby day victory as Lauris Coggin’s team earn back-to-back wins.
WHAT HAPPENED
City made the short trip across the city for one of the most exciting fixtures in the calendar.
And if last season’s encounter at Carrington – a 4-2 comeback win for the Blues – was anything to go by, a thrilling derby awaited.
Neither team wanted to slip up and give the opposition the chance to take an early lead as both outfits incredible energy as possession flipped from team to team.
The best chance fell to Archie Thornton on 13 minutes when the full-back found space at the back post from a corner and fired a first-time effort goal bound.
But, the ball flew straight into the hands of United ‘keeper Charlie Hardy to palm the ball away.
In the other goal, Ben Vickery was then called into action to deny Jaume Sidos from close range six minutes later.
A foul on Teddie Lamb on the edge of the United box gave City the perfect chance to take the lead.
Finlay Gorman fired a perfectly placed left-footed free-kick towards the top-left corner, but Hardy read the set piece well and his diving save denied City once again.
As momentum continued to shift, Vickery was next to make a save. He denied a shot from the left by Nathaniel-Junior Brown on 37 minutes before City weathered a persistent United storm until half-time, but managed to keep the score level.
City looked determined to start the second half on the front foot and Thornton had an early chance to head our young blues in front.
He rose highest again at the back post on 50 minutes, but his effort went just wide of the left post.
Thornton, with a carbon copy chance, this time saw his header cleared off the line by a red shirt on 64 minutes.
Finally, City made the United net bulge.
Dexter Oliver found the pocket in the centre of the pitch and played the ball out wide to Wain.
The skipper drove down the right and played a pinpoint, low cross into the box which fed Lamb perfectly as the number nine tapped the ball into the back of the United net just after the hour.
City showed passion as we dominated play for the final 20 minutes.
But two vital saves by Vickery were needed as we claimed bragging rights and a deserved 1-0 win in the first Manchester derby of 2026/27.
