Pep Guardiola has paid a glowing tribute to Alex Williams the Club's trailblazing former goalkeeper who recently stepped down from his ambassadorial role with City in the Community after 33 years.

The Manchester City head coach wrote the foreword to Alex’s recently-released autobiography You Saw Me Standing Alone.

In the month where we mark and celebrate Black History Month, Pep admitted the name of Alex Williams figured prominently when he researched the Club’s heritage.

Pep writes in the book: “When I arrived at Manchester City in 2016, I immediately began learning about the Club’s history. The staff at City helped me by telling me stories of the past, outlining the main figures and moments that were key parts of our long existence, and the legacy of Alex Williams was a huge part of that.

“Not only was he a trailblazer as one of the first black goalkeepers to play in the top division in England, but he had also carved out a second amazing career as Head of City in the Community. His commitment, dedication and professionalism are remarked on by all those who have worked closely with him.

“Alex played for the club he supported and did so with distinction. How many people can say they have lived their dream? And how many people can say they have overcome so many obstacles in doing so? His story is special and that’s why he is so often part of the conversation when people discuss Manchester City’s past.

“City in the Community is at the heart of everything Manchester City is about. The roots of our football club form the charity’s guiding principles today – to help the local community be healthier and happier. Alex has been at the centre of its development almost from the beginning. He has dedicated so much of his life to help others, which says everything about his values and morality.”
