Manchester City’s charity, City in the Community (CITC), is helping young people across Greater Manchester to build healthy futures and gain employability through its City Careers programme.

Catered for people aged 16–25, the free course supports participants in developing the skills and confidence, as well as obtaining qualifications needed to progress into employment, education or training.

As part of the programme CITC work in collaboration with The Kings Trust to offer industry specific experiences that run in line with their ‘Get Started’ model, which is a series of free, short courses designed to help young people who are not in work, education, or training discover new interests and plan their next steps.

The charity has once again taken part in The Kings Trust ‘Get Started’ week, which sees 17 participants engage in hands-on, sector specific training across the five-day course.

This included session planning, developing skills to understand how to create safe environments, delivering interventions, and developing teamwork skills.

Abdallah, a participant who took part in ‘Get Started’ week, reflected on impact of the workshops, saying: “It has been incredibly interesting, and I feel like I have learnt a lot.

“It’s been great meeting so many people who are so committed and passionate about their jobs, and I think it’s given me the confidence I need to pursue my future career plans.”

After the week of workshop participants took part in a celebration event, where they were able to reflect on what they’d learnt, as well as commemorating their hard work and achievements with their peers.

CITC has also offered three months of mentoring through the City Careers programme, to further support with next career steps.

This involves long term participant-led mentoring, where young people can access 1-2-1 information, advice and guidance on their chosen pathway.

Oliver Murphy, Education Officer, discussed the importance of providing young people with employability skills through the course, saying: “Our partnership with The King’s Trust is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared purpose.

“By combining our expertise, networks and passion for supporting young people, we’re able to extend our reach, strengthen our impact and ensure even more people across our communities have access to opportunities that have a genuine long-term impact.

“We’re helping young people see opportunities they may never have considered or believed they could access.

“Whether that’s coaching, community engagement, health and wellbeing, education or other roles within the football industry, we’re committed to making these pathways more accessible and inclusive for everyone.”

Delivered over ten weeks, the City Careers programme provides hands-on support to help young people grow both professionally and personally.

Participants gain key employability skills, including CV writing, cover letter development, interview preparation and how to approach job applications.

The course also offers the opportunity for participants to gain qualifications, that could further aid in their search for employment opportunities, especially within the sport industry.

Qualifications on offer to participants include:
•    FA Playmaker Qualification
•    Level 2 Community Sports Leadership Qualification

Greg, a participant on the course, reflected how the course impacted him.

He said:“My time at City in the Community has been a huge help not only with improving the quality of my job applications, but it has also helped me gain confidence in new environments and in relation to meeting new people.”

At the end of the programme, participants are supported through mentoring opportunities and follow on CITC programmes, like the 93:20 volunteering programme.
