To celebrate his birthday today, watch as the former City captain Vincent Kompany reflected on the atmosphere in the build-up to our crucial 1-0 Manchester derby victory in April 2012 for our documentary 93:20.

The Belgian headed home the only goal of the game at the Etihad Stadium to help Roberto Mancini’s men leapfrog Manchester United with just two matches of the season remaining.

With United dropping points against Wigan and Everton in the weeks leading up to our crucial encounter, City’s victory saw us successfully claw back an eight-point deficit in the space of four games to go top of the table on goal difference.

And in celebration of the ten-year anniversary of our inaugural Premier League title, Kompany has reflected on the tension surrounding one of the standout victories of that historic campaign.

“That derby was special, especially in the build-up. It had been rescheduled which put the game later in the season,” the former City captain reflects.

“Where it was positioned in the season… there weren’t any other fixtures, no European fixtures, no Cup fixtures, no other league games.

“It seemed to be like this was the only game on that day in the world.

“The fact it was a derby just multiplied everything that was already important about this game.

“I think the blue side of Manchester felt like this was the chance, this was the moment (to win the Premier League).

“I could feel the city being vibrant at that time, anywhere you’d go, that was the only thing that mattered.”
