Pep Guardiola hailed the goalscoring performance of Julian Alvarez in the 3-1 win over Red Star Belgrade, stressing: “He is an incredible threat!”

Alvarez’s brace helped City come back from a half-time deficit to earn three points in our opening Champions League Group G game at the Etihad.

Guardiola waxed lyrical about the Argentine ace in his post-match press conference as he spoke of the quality of his all-round game.

On his performance, the boss said: “Really good - all the actions are really good and so quick. The assist from Erling was really good.

“He is so young. What a signing the club have done.

“He has everything - fighting and goals and assists. Incredible, lovely guy.

“Playing behind Erling he is an incredible threat. Really pleased for him, he deserves it.”

Guardiola also spoke glowingly about academy graduate Oscar Bobb, who made his Champions League debut this evening against the Serbian champions.

The manager has been impressed with Bobb’s versatility, courage and industry since the midfielder joined up with the senior squad.

“He is dynamic and has courage,” said Guardiola.

“He lost two balls and has to improve to not do it but sometimes it happens. He is not shy and has an incredible work ethic. So aggressive without the ball.

“This player can play four or five positions. His speed is really good. I like it when he says he would shoot and take responsibility in the final third to win games.”
