Pep Guardiola says Ederson’s ability with the ball at his feet is better than any other goalkeeper he has worked with.

With his calm demeanour and ability to set up attacks, the Brazilian is widely credited with revolutionising his position in the Premier League and his talent in possession is fundamental to Manchester City’s style of play.

Guardiola has been fortunate to work with some of the best goalkeepers of the modern era during his management career, including Victor Valdes Manuel Neuer, but the City boss believes Ederson exceeds them all when it comes to his ability with the ball at his feet.

“Yeah,” he said when asked if the 28-year-old was the best he had coached in terms of possession.

“For the quality of the pass and especially the right moment to give the pass.

“It’s not always the quality of the pass, it’s the moment you have to do it. He has the patience and decision making to do it.”

Guardiola admits there is an element of risk that comes with the way he wants Ederson to play.

City’s No.31 will regularly receive the ball with the opposition attempting to put him under pressure inside his own penalty area, but the Catalan is happy to accept such nerve-jangling moments because of the rewards it can provide.

“When everything works we say how good it is,” he added.

“After he makes some mistakes like his mates, we can’t blame him because he gives us in that process many good things.”
