Phil Foden’s fourth City hat-trick grabbed the headlines but he was just one of several Academy graduates to put on a show in the game.
In fact, Foden was one of the senior players in a much-changed side, with the likes of Rico Lewis and Floyd Samba impressing from the start while Ryan McAidoo and Kaden Braithwaite came off the bench in the second half.

Samba, playing in the central striker’s role, earned the free-kick that led to City’s opener before Lewis teed up Foden’s first two goals.
Then McAidoo grabbed an assist of his own with a fine cross that saw Foden seal the match ball.
Asked in his post-match press conference about his review of the younger talents, Maresca lit up.
“The three players for the Academy were good, especially Floyd. Overall he had a good game,” he began.
“McAidoo had an immediate impact. And Kaden also. For me it’s always a pleasure [to give minutes to Academy players].
“And Phil from the Academy scored a hat-trick and we were able to give some rest to players that have played from day one.”
