Former Manchester City player and City in the Community (CITC) Trustee, Nedum Onuoha, has returned to Harpurhey to open a newly regenerated Healthy Goals space.

The space in Harpurhey was specifically selected following collaboration with Manchester City Council, using local insight and data to identify areas where investment in accessible community sports provision could have the greatest impact.

The regeneration aims to support long-term community development, provide a space where facilities are free to access, helping to create safe, welcoming spaces where local people can enjoy football and physical activity close to home.

In his youth, Nedum lived a mere walking distance from Harpurhey Park. Now returning to open the space, Nedum reflected on what the pitch will mean for the local area:

“There are people who have significant needs and are very much in a position where they feel they’ve been forgotten about. So, I think to have people come forward and show that they care it’s massive.”

Discussing why the space was created within Harpurhey, Michael Geary, CITC CEO said: “I think what this space provides is a sense of ownership and a real sort of communal place for all of the community to come.

“The markings that are down on this space were chosen by local people, the centre circle, designed by local school children and local young people, they were part of the process, part of the consultation. It’s their place, we’re just helping facilitate that.”

The campaign was first launched in May 2023 and has since transformed 14 community football spaces across Greater Manchester.

The latest openings mean City in the Community has now invested £1.25million into spaces to play through Healthy Goals, alongside supporters of the initiative.
