EDErson's premier
league career so far

Season by season

It’s something City fans have long known but now it is official.

Ederson’s 100th Premier League clean sheet sees him enter the pantheon of greats that includes Petr Cech, David Seaman, Peter Schmeichel and Joe Hart amongst others.

The Brazilian is the 17th goalkeeper overall to reach the landmark and the third quickest after Cech and Pepe Reina. He’s also the first Brazilian to triple figures.

SHOP OUR EDERSON RANGE

Since his arrival in 2017, our No.31 has been a pivotal part of Pep Guardiola’s awe-inspiring football that has seen us to four Premier League titles.

With a level of composure that astounds the Etihad crowd on a weekly basis and passing skills that leads fans to joke he could play in midfield, Ederson has revolutionised our style of play.

His ability with the ball at his feet is appreciated by all who watch him play but the influence of his calming presence while City defend cannot be underestimated.

Here we’ll look at each of Ederson’s Premier League seasons so far…

2017/18 – 16 clean sheets – 2nd in the Premier League

Arriving in England as a 23-year-old after two years with Portuguese giants Benfica, Ederson seemed tailor made to be a goalkeeper for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Still exceptionally young for a goalkeeper, he showed no signs of nerves, featuring on 36 occasions in his first Premier League season.

It started with an opening day trip to Brighton, where he kept his first ever Premier League clean sheet. His first at Etihad came at a cost, receiving a Sadio Mane boot to the face and having the cuts to show for it as City ran out 5-0 winners against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

For many a goalkeeper, that may have meant time on the sidelines. However, our Brazilian was straight back in the team for the 4-0 win at Feyenoord just a few days later.

Perhaps his most impressive feat in terms of keeping the ball out of the net in 2017/18 came in the Manchester derby win at Old Trafford.

He was in the right place at the right time to stop Romelu Lukaku’s close range effort before getting back to his feet to deny Juan Mata before City went on to win 2-1.

His first campaign ended with the Blues becoming Centurions and conceding just 27 goals in the process, fewer than anyone else.

Performance of the season: An incredible double save at Old Trafford to cling on to a derby victory

2018/19 – 20 clean sheets – 2nd in the Premier League

The goalkeeper was an ever-present in his second title-winning campaign, not missing a single minute of action as the Blues retained our crown.

He again began with a clean sheet, this time at Arsenal. Incredibly, he also managed to avoid conceding at Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs during the campaign with Stamford Bridge the only big six ground in which he had to pick the ball out of his net.

It was an incredible run of 14 straight victories that sealed a tight title race ahead of Liverpool, and in that time Ederson only conceded four times.

There’s no doubt that his presence, combined with the presence of Vincent Kompany in his last season at City, made the Blues a defensively exceptional side that year.

Perhaps his most decisive contribution over that time was an inspired performance to deny Heung-min Son in a 1-0 victory at the Etihad a few weeks before the season’s end. The Korean forward has always enjoyed facing City but was frustrated by a defiant Ederson display that day.

His first of three Premier League assists also came in this campaign, firing a ball over the top of the Huddersfield Town defence for Sergio Aguero.

2019/20 – 16 clean sheets – 1st in the Premier League

His first Golden Glove award ironically came in his first year that didn’t end with a Premier League winners medal.

City were off the pace in comparison to Liverpool in 2019/20 but still only conceded 35 times, the second-best record in the league.

However, Ederson had his busiest Premier League campaign so far with 68 saves – 10 more than the previous season.

The Brazilian pulled off a number of brilliant saves including a miraculous tip on to his bar to keep a clean sheet at Crystal Palace and racing off his line both home and away against Bournemouth.

Perhaps his most outstanding showing came in the opening match, when he denied headers from both Javier Hernandez and Manuel Lanzini in the same move.

2020/21 – 19 clean sheets – 1st in the Premier League

A second Golden Glove but this time it came with the real prize: the Premier League trophy.

Ederson played 36 times in the league and couldn’t be beaten in over half of them. After a shaky start to the season, City steadied in December and went on another of those long winning runs for which we have become renowned.

Between 19 December and 2 March, we won 15 consecutive matches of which Ederson played 14. In that time he conceded just four goals and never more than one in a match.

He was integral in one match in particular at the start of the season, making three huge interventions to keep Leeds United down to one goal at Elland Road and earn the Blues a point.

The goalkeeper’s second Premier League assist came in the 3-0 victory over Spurs, setting Ilkay Gundogan free to finish.

2021/22 – 20 clean sheets – 1st in the Premier League

With back-to-back titles came a third successive Golden Glove for our man between the sticks, although this one was shared with Liverpool’s Alisson.

In his 37 appearances, he conceded just 26 times as the City defence again played a crucial role in building a title defence. In terms of goals conceded, this was our second-best season since Ederson’s arrival.

After a 1-0 defeat in the season opener, Ederson then didn’t concede for the next five games, laying the foundation for a successful year.

Although he didn’t put long runs together without conceding as in previous seasons, he continued to perform at an exceptional level.

Some of his best work came in one-on-one situations with the Premier League’s leading strikers including Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku.

2022/23 – Nine clean sheets so far

Our goalkeeper is challenging at the top of the charts again, with Newcastle’s Nick Pope currently leading the way.

He began the campaign with three clean sheets in the first five games before a slightly rockier period for the Blues either side of the World Cup.

Now, he will be hoping to top up his tally if City are to challenge leaders Arsenal for a third successive Premier League crown.

Ederson has also added his third Premier League assist, firing a ball above the Brighton defence for Erling Haaland to latch on to and take around goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
